Gardaí have launched an investigation after a petrol-bomb ram raid on a business premises in Cork.
A van loaded with a flammable substance was driven at speed through the gates of a logistic firm’s premises on the outskirts of the city and set alight.
The firm, CEVA, which is believed to have been the target of the attack, has business links with the former Quinn group.
It was announced last February the former Quinn Group, rebranded Aventas Group, was outsourcing its transport and logistics to CEVA, which operates across Ireland and Britain, and has an office in the Waterfront Business Park in Little Island.
There have been several attacks in recent months on other firms which have business links to the former Quinn Group, with rammings and graffiti attacks warning people to “keep their hands off” Quinn businesses. However, gardaí said they are still trying to establish a motive for the attack in the Little Island area.
The alarm was raised around midnight on Friday after what is believed to have been a Transit van was driven at speed through the gates of the CEVA Commercial unit in the Waterfront Business Park, Wallingstown, in Little Island.
Gardaí and several units of the Cork City fire brigade rushed to the scene and found the vehicle ablaze in the yard area to the front of the unit.
The van was completely gutted in the incident. The building was not damaged. There were no injuries.
Gardaí at Mayfield appealed last night for anyone who saw a long-wheel based Transit van, or its occupants driving or acting suspiciously in the area in the hours before the incident on Friday night to contact them. They have appealed for anyone who may have seen individuals fleeing the area at any stage between 10pm and 12am to contact Mayfield garda station on 021 455 8510.
Meanwhile, gardaí are investigating an armed raid on a second-hand store in the city over the weekend.
A lone raider armed with a sawn-off shotgun burst into the Cash Converters shop on MacCurtain St just before closing time on Friday, threatening staff at gunpoint.
The raider, described as being between 5ft 8 in and 5 ft 10 inches tall, of medium build with a Cork accent, made off with jewellery.
